Important Points:
1. The goal of the project is to enhance children’s language and comprehension abilities through listening and talking about stories.
2. The texts that are chosen need to be conceptually challenging so that the children can have an active participation in coming up with the meaning.
3. The most effective talk involved encouraging the children to focus on important story ideas and giving them time to reflect before expecting an answer.
4. Focus on main story ideas as they come instead of waiting until the end to discuss it.
5. Children tend to report on knowledge they already know, so you need to limit that by showing the pictures in a different way.

Keys Steps in Planning a Talk Text Lesson:
1. Make sure that you have chosen an appropriate text based on conceptually challenging characteristics.
2. Plan out initial questions and follow up questions that you would ask your students before and after you have read them the book.
3. Ask the intial questions to your class and help encourage discussion.
4. Begin to read the chosen book to your class.
5. Read the book a few pages without showing the students pictures to make them create responses on their own.
6. Ask questions about what you just read. Do not have just one right answer. Encourage discussion and have students answer the best they can.
7. Begin to show the students the illustrations, including the ones that you did not show them.
8. Repeat the steps above until you have finished the book.
9. Ask the follow up questions that you created based on the entire book.

  1. Rachel, I like the way you wrote the important points and key steps in a numbered format. That made it really clear and easy to read.

  2. I think text talk is a neat way to help children gain understanding when being read aloud to. I read to my daughter every night before bed, so in a way I’m at the beginning stages of text talk with her. She can read books that have pictures with the words underneath them. She learns new vocabulary by listening to what I say while reading books aloud.

  3. Great job Rachel. A clear and thorough response. I think your response covered every important point for an effective Text Talk lesson.
